playgroup festival//

for the past couple of months i have been collaborating on the artwork & concepts for the playgroup festival. here are pictures of the finished leaflet/poster and flyers. the theme is british wildlife, and ticket holders are designated animals to dress up as. these are divided into predator vs prey (apart from the badger/stag!). the idea behind the photoshoot was wind in the willows meets fantastic mr. fox. i can honestly say it was a super fun project to be a part of!

continuous illustration book//

This project is a self-initiated concertina book which will have one continuous narrative illustration. It takes the form of a ludicrous yarn that a boy is spinning, about his day's events, to a group of people waiting at the bus stop. Each character that appears in the tale appears at the end as one of these people. These images are possible elements of the tale that could form parts of the illustration.

parabola project//

The Parabola Project is the brainchild of Telltales, a reading night launched in october 2008 with the goal of drawing together, developing and maintaining a strong creative writing community in cornwall.

The Parabola Project is a collection of work which represents the full writing spectrum in cornwall, profiling first time writers, up and coming talent and established wordsmiths alongside each other.

my bear illustrations (taken from an earlier picture book i created), form the backdrop to Jane Tozer's piece, Invocation to the Brown Bear.

pin it forward//

today i am taking part in pin it forward, an event organised by sfgirlbybay and pinterest.

pinterest is an online programme which allows you to bookmark images from the web in your very own curated gallery. you can follow other people's galleries, and re-pin their images to your own. it also allows you to link back to the original source so credit is given where credit is due!

today's pin it forward event's gallery theme is 'what home means to me', so here's a sneak peak at my own pin board.

I would also like to welcome ev photo chic, a photographer, crafter & designer, who will be pinning her board tomorrow. i look forward to seeing what home means to her!

the meat we eat//

this picture book is a satirical look at the meat industry. in this case, i am concentrating on the pork industry, but turning the process on its head, showing pigs farming humans in the same way that pigs are farmed in real life. the information contained in the text is a paired-down version of actual farming practices (with a little artistic licence in the illustrations!). i am not vegetarian by any stretch, but i wanted to create an awareness of the meat industry from a different perspective. what you take from this is up to you...

updating an old text for the 21st century: the little match girl//

this picture book takes the skeleton of the hans christian andersen classic and re-imagines it in modern times. the little match girl in my tale is a very disturbed and traumatised young girl, who has lost her family in an unnamed tragedy. she returns to the house and proceeds to set fire to it in an attempt to erase it from the landscape. in the flames she sees visions of her former life and longs to be back once more with her parents...

sample page layouts for a revised version of a previous story i'd written called 'Going to Bed With the Lights Turned On'. it's a tale about a girl and a creature who are both afraid of the 'monsters' hiding under their beds, neither one realising that it is themselves who are each other's 'monsters'. the book can start at both ends, finishing in the middle, and is either read from the little girl's perspective, or the creature/monster's.
